Judge Pitts to sever John Carreyrou’s omnibus copyright lawsuit v. 8 AI companies. But unclear if Judge will keep case v. Anthropic.

We will soon have greater clarity with what happens to John Carreyrou’s omnibus lawsuit against 8 AI companies (some of which have already been severed).

Yesterday, Judge Pitts indicated that he will grant the motions to sever the lawsuit. But he had not decided which cases involving which defendant(s) he would keep.

Interestingly, Carreyrou through his company Cambronne, Inc. has informed Judge Martinez-Olguin, who presides over Bartz v. Anthropic, they do not oppose the treatment of Cambronne and two other cases Chicken Soup for the Soul v. Anthopic and Cognella Inc. v. Anthropic, recently filed by the same law firms, as related cases to Bartz v. Anthropic, if Judge Pitts decides to dismiss the part of the omnibus case involving Anthropic.

But, if Judge Pitts retains Cambronne v. Anthropic, the plaintiffs’ lawyers ask for allowing Judge Pitts to relate Chicken Soup and Cognella.

Meanwhile, Anthropic has asked Judge Martinez-Olguin to relate Chicken Soup, Cognella, and Cambronne if and when severed.

Anthropic cites Judge Chhabria’s relation of some of the cases the same plaintiffs filed against Meta.

Which side do you think will win this issue?
