Judge Pitts puts an end to book author John Carreyrou’s attempt to sue the entire US AI industry. Judge severs 5 AI companies from case and keeps suit v. Anthropic alone.

In Carreyrou v. Anthropic, the once omnibus copyright lawsuit against 8 AI companies, Judge Pitts issued his written order, severing the suits against the defendants and dismissing all but the lawsuit against Anthropic, the first named defendant.

The cases against Google, xAI, Perplexity AI, Apple and NVIDIA are dismissed. And it remains to be seen whether Carreyrou will refile individual suits against each. That didn’t occur in the similar omnibus copyright suit filed by the same law firm representing Carreyrou, Chicken Soup for the Soul v. Anthropic after Judge Chhabria sua sponte severed that omnibus suit.

Two other defendants — OpenAI and Meta — were already split from this omnibus lawsuit.

There’s now a good chance that Judge Pitts will also oversee the Chicken Soup for the Soul v. Anthropic, Cognella v. Anthropic, Cruz v. Anthropic, and Kwon v. Anthropic cases because Carreyrou is the earliest filed book author suit against Anthropic (putting aside Bartz — Judge Martinez-Olguin already denied a motion to relate some of those cases).
