Cognella, Inc., an academic publisher, just sued both Anthropic and Meta for alleged copyright infringement in training their AI models.
Cognella is represented by the same law firms representing the plaintiffs in Carreyrou v. Anthropic and ChickenSoup for the Soul v. Meta.
But this time, Stris & Maher and Freedman Normand Friedland LLP have decided to forgo their strategy of filing omnibus copyright lawsuits against 8 AI companies in 1 suit.
Excerpt of suit v. Anthropic:

Excerpt of suit v. Meta:

Side by Side Comparison:

Judge Chhabria already ruled in ChickenSoup for the Soul the omnibus suit violated the joinder rules of Federal Rule of Civil Procedure. And Judge Pitts in Carreryrou now called Cambronne will soon decide whether to sever the lawsuits as well.
Also noteworthy: the complaints allege 3 claims: (1) direct copyright infringement, (2) contributory copyright infringement, and (3) DMCA CMI removal under 1202(b)(1).
That’s different from the prior lawsuits filed by the law firms that were limited to direct infringement.
We will have to wait and see if Stris & Maher and Freedman Normand Friedland LLP file 6 other lawsuits given that their prior lawsuits involved 8 AI companies.
