Google AI overviews draws criticism for drop in traffic and having to allow Google crawler to be part of traditional search

Google drew criticisms from media at WIRED’s AI Power Summit in New York on Monday September 15. Markham C. Erickson, VP of government affairs and public policy at Google, did a valiant effort defending their practice.

The media companies complain that the AI Overviews decrease the traffic to their websites by extracting information so people don’t have to go the sources.

Neil Vogel, the CEO of People Inc., also criticized Google for websites having to allow its crawler to be a part of traditional search, which then exposes their content to AI Overviews (and presumably AI Mode).

Google’s defense of AI summaries in search results was robustly challenged by a panel of media leaders at WIRED’s AI Power Summit in New York on Monday September 15. Markham C. Erickson, VP of government affairs and public policy at Google, said Google wanted a “healthy ecosystem,” but that users’ preferences were changing to “increasingly wanting contextual answers and summaries.” But in a separate panel, Neil Vogel, the CEO of People Inc., said the notion that Google cared about a healthy internet was “not true.”
