OpenAI CEO Sam Altman warned the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday about the risks of rapid AI advancement and called for global cooperation to mitigate them, which he said include losing control of the future to AI and concentrating power in too few hands. “As the process of building AI becomes more automated, the pace of AI progress could accelerate rapidly. This moment calls for extreme care,” he said. He warned that AI was advancing at a rate where it could soon outpace human ability to follow what’s happening or intervene when needed. “The industry must not accept too much technological risk just because the benefits are too great and that they feel too important to slow down,” he said. “Being companies in a competitive race is not a reason to make rash decisions, nor do we believe we are locked in a race where we’re unable to do that. We have unilaterally slowed down in the past. We will do so in the future.” He also warned the AI race could concentrate “too much power into too few hands.” “No one person or company or country should be able to use the most powerful AI models to impose their worldview on everyone else,” he said. “A company or country that believes only it can be trusted with this technology can use that belief to justify almost anything else. We have to reject that logic, even when it’s convenient for any one actor.” He called for countries to come together for the collective good, saying it was necessary to have common standards for measuring capabilities, assessing risk, determining whether safeguards are sufficient and preserving meaningful human oversight. “Each government should decide how to incorporate standards into its own legal system, but we will all be better off if we can agree on what good evidence, good safeguards and good oversight look like on the global stage,” he said. #samaltman #openai #ai #unitednations #cspan

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday about the risks of unchecked rapid AI advancement, which he said could lead to misuse of the models and a loss of human control over the technology. “These questions are global in scope and concern all of humanity,” he said. “They are grave enough that I believe they are important questions for this council, not just economic or ICT ministries. If managed poorly, I even believe that AI could be a risk to humanity as a whole.” Mr. Amodei said he believes Anthropic is leading the industry in safety standards, but that even more stringent safeguards will be needed. “We will slow down as much as necessary in order to make sure that every successive AI technology that we release is actually safe,” he said. “But regardless of what we do, managing these risks is ultimately bigger than any one company.” He called for starting with narrow agreements that everyone can support, like banning the use of AI to further the development of biological weapons. He also said there should be global standards for building evaluation and verification systems to promote transparency and for testing models and evaluating risks. “I believe that this is the most important global security issue facing the world today,” he said. “For all the differences of the people in this room, we must put aside those differences in order to confront this global opportunity and global threat that is being presented to us at the same time. No leader, no company and no nation can manage this alone.” cspan anthropic amodei ai news
