Bartz Class Counsels says payouts on or before Nov. 15 with initial payout of $2,203.56

The Bartz Class Counsel has officially spoken: payouts of approximately $2,203.56 per work will be sent to class members on or before Nov. 15, 2026.

Payout 1: This initial payout is based on the money in escrow at that time, or “$1,083,000,000 inclusive of the additional expected interest.”

Payout 2: The remaining money due from Anthropic, or Scheduled Payment 2, equals $450 million plus interest. As I read the Status Report, a second payout will be made after the money is transferred. Then presumably the second payout will be around another $930 per work, making the total payout a little over $3,000. (*This is my calculation, not an official one, based on my interpretation.)

The reason the payout is not happening “within 28 days of the Effective Date,” as I originally predicted (see below story), is that the Settlement Agreement allows the Class Counsel to determine a different date. The Class Counsel has done so: it has incorporated time to send each class member “a consolidated from listing their percentage share of any settlement work(s)” by Sept. 4. Claimants then have 30 days to contest it.
