OpenAI is flooding the zone. This week, it launched two new features to compete with TikTok, YouTube, and Amazon.
1. Buy It with Instant Checkout on ChatGPT: The first is the ability to shop on ChatGPT. This adds an alternative source of revenue and creates a potential rival to Amazon and TikTok shop. As more consumers rely on AI agents as personal assistants, purchases can migrate to AI chatbots.
Amazon is the game in town. But it’s not the only game. TikTok has popularized “social shopping” when people make purchases while scrolling social media. As you can see from this chart, the orange portion of shopping revenues on TikTok has steadily increased.
OpenAI has partnered with Etsy and Shopify for its Instant Checkout feature. “We’re also open-sourcing the technology that powers Instant Checkout, the Agentic Commerce Protocol, so that more merchants and developers can begin building their integrations. The Agentic Commerce Protocol is an open standard for AI commerce that lets AI agents, people, and businesses work together to complete purchases. We co-developed it with Stripe and leading merchant partners to be powerful, secure, and easy to adopt.”
2. Sora 2 AI video social media platform/generator: If OpenAI’s foray into chatbot shopping were not big enough news, it followed up with the rollout of its Sora 2 social media app. You can think of it as a TikTok for videos generated with AI, which includes the ability to include yourself in AI generated videos.
So, instead of physically dancing for a silly TikTok video, you can now do so sitting on the couch. You can be both the director and the actor in your videos or cameos.
