Copyright suits v. AI hits 49. Book authors Hendrix v. Apple.

On Friday Sept. 5, 2025, Hendrix v. Apple became the 49th copyright lawsuit filed against AI companies for allegedly infringing copyrights. Plus, the Hendrix suit is the 18th copyright suit filed by book authors. Docket here. (The total number of lawsuits was corrected on Sept. 14, 2025.)

This lawsuit against Apple is the first against it — but no surprise. It was bound to happen given their development of Apple Intelligence.

Two book authors, Grady Hendrix and Jennifer Roberson, are proposing to represent a class action of books authors against Apple. They are trying to use the same playbook as the Bartz book authors used against Anthropic, which led to a proposed settlement of $1.5 billion dollars ($3,000 per book in the class of 465,000 books), the highest ever in the history of U.S. copyright law.
