Daily News and 7 other newspapers sue OpenAI, Microsoft in new copyright lawsuit v. AI (PDF Complaint)

A group of major newspapers, including lead plaintiff Daily News, the Chicago Tribune, Orlando Sentinel, Sun-Sentinel, San Jose Mercury News, Denver Post, Orange County Register, and St. Paul Pioneer Press, filed a new copyright lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft.

This now brings the total number of AI copyright lawsuits to 22 in the United States.

The lawsuit was filed by lawyers from the law firm of Rothwell, Figg, Ernst & Manbeck, who are co-counsel in the lawsuit the New York Times filed, also in the Southern District of New York.

Update (May 1, 2024): We thought there was a second copyright lawsuit filed, but the Pacer entry mysteriously omits the defendant and the complaint. So, it’s possible this is a mistake, and there is no second lawsuit. That would be odd, though, because there is an official docket number (No. 1:24-cv-03281). In any event, we have revised this article to omit any second lawsuit unless the Pacer docket is updated to include the complaint. We will update this post if we find any information about this docket entry.
