OpenAI ARR $20 billion lower than estimate. Mallaby: OpenAI faces “funding crisis”

OpenAI’s ARR is $20 billion lower than estimates, closer to $50 billion than the projected $70 billion. Earlier this year, Sebastian Mallaby of the Council on Foreign Relations predicted in the New York Times that “OpenAI Will Run Out of Money” in the next 18 months. Since Mallaby said this in January, I guess he means now in the next 8 months.

If OpenAI runs out of cash flow in the next 8 months, presumably it would have to consider filing for bankruptcy to discharge some of its debt or financial obligations. It would also likely affect the many copyright and tort lawsuits OpenAI faces. By my unofficial count, OpenAI faces 100 lawsuits in the United States alone. Mallaby didn’t include the possible damages awards that OpenAI might face from these 100 lawsuits, but I’ve seen other commentators run numbers on potential amounts.
