The Northern District of California is the epicenter of AI copyright lawsuits, 47 and counting

The Northern District of California, the jurisdiction for Silicon Valley, is the clear epicenter of AI copyright lawsuits. Not just in the United States, but in the world.

There are now 47 copyright lawsuits against AI companies. That’s more lawsuits than the total suits in the countries in rest of the world combined.

The Southern District of New York is second, with 31, a number inflated by the MDL litigation against OpenAI and Microsoft before Judge Stein. All other jurisdictions with AI copyright cases have only a few.

Soon every active judge in the Northern District of California will likely end up with multiple suits. I think there may be only one full-time judge who does not have any: Judge Wise. (The others without AI copyright cases are all senior status: Judges Chesney, Illston, Gilliam, Hamilton, White, and Wilken.)

And other than Judge Stein, who presides over the OpenAI MDL litigation, the Top 10 of judges who have the most AI copyright lawsuits are all located in the Northern District of California.
