Latest U.S. Map of Copyright Suits v. AI companies (Mar. 27, 2027) Total = 97

We are nearing the milestone number of 100 copyright lawsuits against AI companies. Currently at 97 suits. Note: we are counting Carreyrou v. OpenAI already; Judge Thompson ordered it severed from Carreyrou v. Anthropic by stipulation of the parties, so it can be transferred to the MDL Litigation against OpenAI. The N.D. California opened up a separate case for it, but it does not appear to have been transferred yet. That may be due to Judge Thompson’s later recusal from the entire lawsuit.

In this map, we added 6 recently filed lawsuits:

  1. Chicken Soup for the Soul v. Anthropic (ND Cal.) (books)
  2. BMG v. Anthropic (ND Cal.) (sound recordings)
  3. Beaulier v. NVIDIA (ND Cal.) (3D models)
  4. Beaulier v. Meta (ND Cal.) (3D models)
  5. Beaulier v. Roblox (ND Cal.) (3D models)
  6. Beaulier v. Microsoft (ND Cal.) (3D models)

Also, Anders v. Stability AI in the Western District of North Carolina has been dismissed on a motion to dismiss based on the licensing agreement signed by the plaintiff broadly allowing “Defendant Navarr a “perpetual” and “irrevocable” right to “distribute” and “sub-license” the Plaintiff’s copyrighted works “for all types of commercial and consumer uses” and to grant
“duplication rights” to clients.” [Opinion: https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.ncwd.122270/gov.uscourts.ncwd.122270.27.0.pdf]

  1. Until appellate rulings and probably SCOTUS ruling or define to hear, the torrent of lawsuits will continue because economics. Since AI companies have money, they’re a juicy target.
