Judge Thompson expedites consideration of motions to sever omnibus copyright suit filed by author John Carreyrou v. AI industry

Judge Trina Thompson moved up the consideration of defendant AI companies’ motion to sever the omnibus copyright lawsuit that book author John Carreyrou filed against nearly the entire U.S. AI industry: OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, Perplexity AI, xAI, and Google.

Order re Defendants’ Motions to Sever: Any Defendant intending to file a motion to sever shall file such a motion by February 24, 2026.

Plaintiffs’ opposition to the various motions to sever may be filed as one opposition against all pending motions to sever. Plaintiffs’ opposition is due by March 9, 2026.

Defendants’ replies are due March 16, 2026.

A hearing on the motions to sever is set for March 24, 2026, at 2:00PM in San Francisco, Courtroom 09, 19th Floor before Judge Trina L Thompson. This Order MODIFIES the briefing schedule on Defendant Google’s motion to sever at ECF 94 .
