OpenAI hit with another newspaper copyright lawsuit. Newspapers want over $10 billion from OpenAI. Total = 61 copyright suits v. AI cos.

The week continues to get worse for OpenAI and Microsoft.

After losing its attorney-client privilege regarding its deletion of Books1 and 2 datasets in 2022, OpenAI, along with Microsoft, was hit with another copyright lawsuit. This follows a report of an internal OpenAI memo in which Sam Altman warned employees of “economic headwinds” and “rough vibes” presented by Google’s rapid ascent, if not lead, in AI.

Even before this new lawsuit was filed, ChatGPT even said OpenAI was in “dangerous waters.” Well, those waters just got even more dangerous.

California Newspaper Partnership v. Microsoft Corp. is the 15th copyright lawsuit v. OpenAI in the United States.

The plaintiffs are seeking over $10 billion in damages from OpenAI and Microsoft.

This is the 61st copyright lawsuit filed against AI companies in the U.S.

OpenAI also faces 3 other copyright suits in Brazil, Germany, and India. OpenAI leads the total count of copyright lawsuits, by far. No other company (other than its partner Microsoft Corp.) comes close to the roughly 18 copyright lawsuits OpenAI faces around the world.
