President Trump reportedly just fired the Register of Copyrights Shira Perlmutter, less than 24 hours after she made available a pre-publication version of the Report on AI training and Fair Use. It’s unclear, at the moment, the reason for the firing, but the timing is at least suggestive. The “pre-publication” status of the report might relate to the subsequent termination.
This does raise a huge cloud of uncertainty over whether the report will ever become official. Presumably, the interim Register can decide whatever they want to do with it, including rescinding or rejecting it.
We shall see but the Report may be DOA.
