Elon Musk makes $97.4B offer to buy OpenAI

Elon Musk and a group of investors have offered to buy, unsolicited, OpenAI for $97.4 billion, as first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

That price seems low, given that OpenAI was recently valued at $300 billion.

UPDATE: But the $97.4 billion offer apparently may complicate OpenAI’s attempt to convert from nonprofit to for-profit company. Gary Marcus reported that, as a part of that conversion, OpenAI proposed to use $40 billion as the assets for not-for-profit use. It’s unclear whether Musk’s offer or any of the funding round valuations would affect how much OpenAI would have to designate as the assets for non-for-profit.
