OpenAI CTO Mira Murati leaves company, adding to departures of top executives

CTO of OpenAI Mira Murati just resigned after 6 years at the company. She adds to the growing list of top executives, some of whom had concerns about AI safety, leaving OpenAI. Murati’s departure is quite striking as it comes on the heels of Sam Altman’s prediction that superintelligence is only a few thousands of days away. Plus, today, as reported first by Krystal Hu and Kenrick Cai of Reuters, OpenAI is planning to convert from a nonprofit to a for-profit benefit corporation, with CEO Sam Altman receiving equity in the company for the first time.

The reasons for the departures may vary. But it’s hard to think of another successful startup company, indeed the leader in the AI field, with so many of its top executives exiting. Plus, momentarily, Sam Altman was booted from the company in coup by the Board and Ilya Sutskever, who is no long with the company.
