In its Answer to the first amended complaint filed by Grady Hendrix and other book authors, Apple admits using a subset of the Redpajama dataset containing books. But Apple says it was research purpose that is fair use.
So, if we condemn Apple for engaging in this use of RedPajama for AI research, we probably should condemn academic researchers for starting this practice and condemn them, too.
Apple’s defense intersects with the broader question about AI training on copyrighted works that originated in academic research. Apparently, RedPajama was commonly used in academic research. Two other lawsuits raise this issue squarely.
